THE GREAT BUTTER TART DEBATE

Are your butter tarts worthy of being crowned the BEST in The Ottawa Valley?

Divisions:

  1. Professional Baker (business), entry fee included in your Vendor Fee to the Show

  2. Home Baker, entry fee $10.00 per entry

Categories:

  1. Raisin

  2. Pecan

  3. OG

  4. Gangsta: Bacon, Chocolate, Coconut etc.

Guidelines for Home Bakers:

Contest is open to kids, teens, and adults of all ages. Amateur bakers only and kids (18 and under) must be accompanied by an adult while baking and that adult must complete the registration form and accompany the home baker to The Big Buck Show.


Professional bakers & businesses cannot compete in the home baker category. Professional bakers have their own category and the registrants are full with Vendors showcasing at The Big Buck Show – Ottawa Valley Edition. A professional baker is defined as someone who works for a bakery, works for or owns a catering company, or someone who sells butter tarts.


Each butter tart entered must have an entry form and a $10 entry fee brought to the Community Stage at The Big Buck Show Ottawa Valley Edition by 11:30AM, live/blind on stage taste test starts at 12:00PM Sharp. No late entries beyond 11:30AM will be accepted. Winners will be announced during the live judging at The Great Butter Tart Debate segment hosted on the Community Stage from 1:00PM-1:45PM.

Multiple entries are permitted per Home Baker, however, you will not be allowed to enter more than one item in each category or in another person’s name. $10.00 Entry Fee applies to each category entered.

IMPORTANT FOR HOME BAKERS: Pre-registration is suggested, please submit the form below by email to bigbuckshowottawavalley@gmail.com with the subject title Home Baker Entry. If you do not pre-register we can not guarantee your spot in the competition due to volume. We are accepting a maximum of 20 Home Bakers.

Guidelines for ALL Bakers:

Butter tarts must be made from scratch. Bakers may not use store bought crust or filling. All entries must be baked in an oven to be eligible.  Fried or otherwise prepared foods will not be accepted.

Multiple entries are permitted per Business or Home Baker, however, you will not be allowed to enter more than one item in each category or in another person’s name. For Home Bakers, a $10.00 Entry Fee applies to each category entered.

Each entry will be assigned a number, thus enabling a “blind” judging.  No judge or contestant may be privy to their assigned number during the contest.  Contestants who attempt to learn their assigned number(s) will be asked to leave, forfeiting their entry and entry fee.  Entries identified will be disqualified and the entry fee will be forfeited.

Entries should be delivered in DISPOSABLE CONTAINERS. Please do not submit your entries in anything other than a disposable container as we will not be responsible for returning any Tupperware, service trays, muffin tins, etc.  Please have your entry packed and ready for submission PRIOR to your arrival at The Big Buck Show.

Entries will be disqualified for the following reasons, and at the sole discretion of the event staff and judging panel:

  • Branding or identification on butter tarts  

  • Indication that tarts submitted have not been prepared by the entrant whose name appears on the application

  • Tarts are not regular size (no mini or bite-size)

  • Tarts that are not delivered to the contest by an adult (children MUST be accompanied by an adult)

  • Incomplete contest entry form or unpaid entry fee

There are four entry categories: Raisin, Pecan, OG or Gangsta – however there is only ONE winner per division for 1: Business and 2: Home baker

For safety reasons, NO BUTTER TARTS REQUIRING REFRIGERATION WILL BE ADMITTED e.g. No cream, ice cream, cheese etc.

Each butter tart submitted must include a printed recipe with the list of ingredients; however, recipes will not be shared or re-printed without permission of the competitor.

There are 5 anonymous judges, however, please submit 7 butter tarts (5 for judging and two for display)

Entrants grant The Big Buck Show the rights to all image media of their entry and of the accompanying adults in whole or in part, for any advertising or promotional purposes whatsoever in any and all types of media.  The entrant’s name will be included whenever it is used.

Winning contestants agree to have photos of themselves and their entries published as deemed appropriate by The Big Buck Show.

Blind Judging: 
1. Judges will use the scoring guide shown below.
2. Judges will not know the identity of the butter tart bakers.
3. Judging will begin at 1:00PM Sharp, your entry must be submitted by 11:30AM, with winners being announced around 1:45 p.m.
4. Judges will independently assign each butter tart a score without consultation.
5. In the case of a tie, judges will judge those butter tarts again.
6. For each division Business & Home Baker, a winner and trophy will be announced for each division.

Scoring Criteria:

  1. Overall Presentation - 25 Points

  2. Overall Taste - 25 points     

  3. Overall Texture - 25 points

  4. Overall Impression - 25Points


All Judges’ decisions are final!
